MATERIALECOLOGY: Neri Oxman

The International Conference on Advanced Research in Virtual and Rapid Prototyping (VRAP), organised every two years since 2003, has been designed to be a major forum for the Scientific exchange of multi disciplinary and inter-organisational aspects of virtual and physical prototyping and related areas. VRAP aims at making a significant contribution for further development of these fields. In 2007, as in the two previous editions, we gathered participants from more than 20 countries. The Conference carries out a full paper submission. Selected papers will be published in special issues of International Journals.

Fast Company magazine has named Joseph F. Coughlin, director of MIT's AgeLab, and Neri Oxman, a graduate student in MIT's Media Lab, to its inaugural list of the "100 Most Creative People in Business." In its June issue, the magazine lauds Coughlin's research as being "devoted to using smart technology to bolster older folks' quality of life." Oxman, who graces the magazine's cover, is described as an "artist, architect, ecologist, computer scientist and designer who is not just making new things but also coming up with new ways to make things." Fast Company's list -- which includes Jonathan Ive, senior vice president of Industrial Design at Apple, Melinda Gates of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and Michele Ganeless, president of Comedy Central -- features at least three others with MIT connections. They include chemist George Whitesides, formerly an MIT professor and now at Harvard; former MIT economics professor Susan Athey, now Microsoft's chief economist and a professor at Harvard University; and inventor Saul Griffith SM '01, PhD '04. The list is "a snapshot of the range and depth of creativity across our business landscape -- a remarkable and perhaps surprising source of strength in these times of turmoil," says Fast Company Editor Robert Safian.

NEW YORK, Jan 13, 2009 (BUSINESS WIRE) -- On January 12, MIT fellow Neri Oxman was named winner of the first The Earth Awards. TED Prize winner Cameron Sinclair and Datin Azrene Abdullah presented the award to Oxman in recognition of her groundbreaking project FAB.REcology, which combines principals of biomimicking with the design and construction of built environments.

Master of ceremonies Charlie Rose interviewed all ten finalists in Philip Johnson's iconic Four Seasons Restaurant before the winner was named. The event united some of the world's most influential environmentalists, architects and media to form an elite Selection Committee who chose Oxman. Committee members present included Paola Antonelli, Adam Bly, David Buckland, Antonio de la Rua, Scott Hahn, Peter Head, Graham Hill, Michael McDonough, Barry Malebuff, Sergio Palleroni, John Picard, Suzanne Trocme, Dilys Williams and Kenneth Yeang.

Organizers conducted a global search for products and concepts that are sustainable, innovative and essential to improving basic quality of life. The winner and finalists will meet with joint venture companies in the hopes of generating commercial opportunities.

The Earth Awards are an initiative of ecoStyle Project established by the Malaysian Government, whose support underpins the government's focus on sustainability in its national policy and development plans. The event was jointly produced by NYC Inc., kontentreal, and IMG Fashion, and sponsored by Tourism Malaysia. Representing Malaysia were daughter of the Prime Minister Datin Azrene Abdullah, Princess Myra Madihah, Ambassador Hamidon & Counsel General Zamruni. Prime Minister Dato' Seri Abdullah Haji Ahmad Badawi noted, "It's an honor to be part of this event, and I applaud The Earth Awards for fostering a critical dialogue and spirit of innovation in response to the global energy crisis."

A group of renowned architects and critics will explore speculative work, designs that require a willing suspension of disbelief and projects that are not straightforward manifestation as buildings, for three days at Cornell, Oct. 30-Nov. 1. The symposium, Architecture of Disbelief, sponsored by Preston H. Thomas Memorial Lecture Series in the Department of Architecture, will introduce participants to a canon of speculative work and look to its ongoing development. The symposium kicks off with a keynote address by Neil Spiller, vice dean and professor of architecture and digital theory at London's Bartlett School. Lebbeus Woods, co-founder of the Research Institute for Experimental Architecture and a professor at Cooper Union, will present a lecture, "Against Design," The symposium session Saturday includes an address by Jeffrey Kipnis. Neri Oxman will present her recent work and research entitled: Voodoo Code. A publication is planned to document the event and accompanying exhibition in Sibley Hall's Hartell Gallery.

Neri Oxman (MIT) and A. John Hart (University of Michigan) received the first prize in the Next Generation category of the Holcim Awards for Sustainable Construction, 2008. The Holcim Awards ceremony for North America was held on October 16, 2008, in Montreal. Oxman's and Hart's winning entry is entitled: "Construction In Vivo" and offers a novel approach to the design, fabrication and construction of smart building skins using Carbon Nano Tubes.

This week in Minneapolis: The Association for Computer-Aided Design in Architecture (ACADIA) together with the Digital Design Consortium in the School of Architecture and Computer Science at the University of Minnesota will hold the ACADIA 2008 conference in Minneapolis. The upcoming conference entitled Silicon + Skin: Biological Processes and Computation fosters design work and research from the worlds of practice and academia which lie at the intersection between design, biology, and computation. More specifically, this conference seeks to identify and examine current trends in digital design technologies developed and applied in the framework of biologically inspired processes and digitally assisted sustainable design.

The third edition of the International Biennial of Contemporary Art of Seville (Biacs3) will be held from 2 October 2008 to 11 January 2009 and will occupy the main exhibition site at the Centro Andaluz de Arte Contemporáneo (CAAC) while branching out into public spaces in Seville and Granada. The curatorial team includes Peter Weibel, general director of the ZKM Centre for Art and Media in Karlsruhe, Germany, Wonil Rhee, Korean exhibition curator, and Marie-Ange Brayer, director of the Regional Centre of Contemporary Art of Orleáns, France. They exhibition aims to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to the general theme of the event, and specifically to address the ties between art, science, technology and architecture in the global context of the information and communication society.
